Inspired by true events, ODILE is a powerful socially relevant family drama, focusing on one mother's all-or-nothing drive to succeed in the betterment of her family's future.
The story is about a Black French immigrant mother whose ultimate quest to make a better life for her mixed-race son in London, turns into her ultimate grief. Her estranged alcoholic husband is found dead in a homeless shed and then her son is viciously attacked by a notorious gang in the social housing flat they recently moved into.
ODILE intertwines social issues such as the housing crisis (currently affecting an estimated 8.4 million people in England), domestic violence, racism, and knife crime in London. With planned bi-lingual English and French English subtitles.
Writer-Director: Elsie Nemlin

After moving from Paris to London with her husband and young son, Odile dreams of building a better life for her family. But when her husband's struggle to adapt turns into alcoholism and domestic abuse, she is forced to flee with her son, Jean-Philippe, seeking safety in women's shelters across the city. Widowed after a shocking tragedy, Odile hopes for a fresh start when she is offered social housing. Instead, she finds herself trapped on a crime-ridden estate where knife violence threatens her son's future. Desperate to escape and protect the child she loves, Odile exhausts every avenue of help before being confronted with an impossible choice. A powerful London-set drama, ODILE explores domestic abuse, housing insecurity, knife crime and a mother's determination to save her child at any cost.

ODILE was inspired by real-life experiences and the social challenges facing many families across Britain today. More than fifteen years ago, while leading a community organisation in South London, I encountered families affected by poverty, housing insecurity, domestic abuse and knife crime. Their stories stayed with me and became the foundation for this film. Through Odile's journey, I wanted to explore the resilience of a mother determined to protect her child against overwhelming odds, while shining a light on issues that continue to affect communities across the country. My hope is that ODILE not only moves audiences emotionally, but also encourages meaningful conversations about the realities many families face and the importance of compassion, support and hope.
